BASIC INFORMATION

Romanov-on-Murman

Murmansk (in 1916-1917 - Romanov-on-Murman) is a city in the north-west of Russia, the administrative center of the Murmansk region, the unofficial capital of the Eastern (Russian) part of Lapland.

Murmansk is the largest city in the world, located beyond the Arctic Circle. Murmansk is located on the rocky eastern coast of the Kola Bay of the Barents Sea. One of the largest ports in Russia. Thanks to the warm North Atlantic Current, Murmansk is an ice-free port, which favorably distinguishes it among the ports of the North and North-West of Russia.

For the defense against German troops during the Great Patriotic War, Murmansk was awarded the title of Hero City on May 6, 1985. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Gold Star medal.

Since January 1, 2021, at the level of the municipal structure, it received the name “Urban District, Hero City of Murmansk”.

EXCURSION PROGRAM AND SCHEDULE

1 DAY • 10 LOCATIONS • 12 ATTRACTIONS

1. Gathering of participants
The tour guide will pick you up at the place of departure in Murmansk, which will be convenient for you. It is not only convenient, but also exciting - we will ride around the city to pick up other participants of the excursion.
2. Five Corners Square
The main square of the city. It got its name from the five roads that converge here. Some significant architectural and other sights of Murmansk are concentrated around: the Duma, the Kirov House of Culture, the Volna department store, and the Arktika hotel and business center. Despite the dense buildings and modern appearance, wooden two-story houses remained around the square until the 80s of the last century.
3. Memorial «To the sailors who died in peacetime»
Opened in 2002 on the shore of Lake Semyonov. The memorial consists of a tower stylized as a lighthouse, a ship's anchor, a part of the cabin raised from the Kursk submarine, and the Church of the Savior on Water. The objects of the complex are interconnected by paths and stairs. There are observation platforms at different levels. Inside the tower is a book of memory, which lists the names of sailors who died in peacetime.
4. Memorial «Defenders of the Soviet Arctic» («Alyosha»)
An alternative name is the «Alyosha» memorial. The opening took place on Cape Verde in 1974. The snow-white figure of a soldier, more than 35 meters high, was installed on an impressive pedestal. An eternal flame burns at the base, and an alley of hero cities is broken nearby and there is a stele with the names of military units that participated in the defense of the city during the Great Patriotic War.
5. Monument to a woman waiting for her sailor
An elegant and touching monument was erected on the shore of the Kola Bay in 2012. The figure of a girl looks towards the sea with a bouquet of flowers pressed to her chest and waves to the ships. The money for the sculpture was raised by the townspeople themselves. «Waiting» is a collective image of all women who are looking forward to their husbands, sons and fathers in their native port. The monument is surrounded by a paved area, and a park is laid out nearby.
6. Monument to the chimney
A chimney is installed in the center of the memorial complex. The monument is often called the «chimney monument». It is a symbol of what remains of Murmansk after the cruel bombing of 1942.
7. Icebreaker and Marine Station
Launched in 1959. At the time of construction, she was the first surface ship on the planet with a nuclear installation. Used to service the Northern Sea Route. During its service, the icebreaker sailed 3740 ships. It was decommissioned in 1989, after which it was sent to an eternal parking lot in Murmansk. At the moment, a museum for the development of the Arctic has been opened on board the «Lenin».
8. Bridge over the Kola Bay
The four-lane Kola Bridge bears the title of one of the longest bridges in Russia and the longest road bridge beyond the Arctic Circle. The length of the entire structure is about 2.5 km, and the length of the surface part is 1.6 km. Construction was carried out from the early 1990s to 2005. The main purpose of the bridge is to link Murmansk with the western regions of the Murmansk region, Norway and Finland.
9. Abram Cape
Here you can see not only a beautiful view of Murmansk from the opposite bank of the Kola Bay, but also the Memorial Complex to the soldiers of the 1st Air Defense Corps is located. Created to almost remember the soldiers who defended the city during the Great Patriotic War. The grand opening took place in August 1984. Then the central monument was a wide and high pedestal lined with stone, on which an anti-aircraft gun was hoisted. Ten years later, fighters, Yak-3s, anti-aircraft missile launchers and a radar cockpit were added. Nearby there is an alley of veterans and a stele for an air defense woman warrior.

Excursion - Photo-trip to Teriberka
It was amazing! The excursion was like a hunt: interesting, recklessly and even dramatic (at some point it seemed to us that because of the sky covered with clouds we would not see the radiance), but Andrey is a cool professional and we saw such a radiance and play, from which to still chills with memories)) Andrey has excellent photographic equipment, photos and videos were received the next morning!

We also drove to Teriberka - also great impressions. Very attentive and sincere attitude of Andrey and his wife to each tourist. You can feel the love of these people for the place in which they live. It costs a lot!

It was a great ride! Service at the highest level. We found the northern lights, although the chances weren't great. We were treated to tea, warmed up and took a bunch of photos. Only positive emotions remained from the excursion)

Excursion - Hunting for the Northern Lights
Dear Lyuba, thank you very much for organizing and well-conducted excursion! Your love for your work and your land, your involvement made us think about additional trips to the Murmansk region and we will, of course, be with you :).
In fact. Lyuba, at our request, met my friend and me at the airport and we went on a tour. The car is very comfortable and roomy, there was even room for suitcases.
Lyuba first of all outlined the plan of the day and how long to go to the first point; where there will be toilets and where you can eat; it was important to me. Separately, Lyuba said that she remembers our wishes for visiting additional places. Another concern of the guide was the sandwiches she took with her and the herbal tea brewed especially for us.
It was also not boring on the road, despite the two-hour drive, it was interesting to listen to the stories of the guide.
In general, the day was wonderful: beautiful unusual places, a fully completed program of a rich excursion and at a comfortable pace, an interesting and intelligent companion-guide, many photographs taken with them, including those taken by Anyone and sent to us in the evening of the same day ...
All this remained with us warm emotions.
Thanks!

Excursion - Photo-trip to Teriberka
Was on an excursion with my family on June 27. The excursion went well with interesting informational support. The guide Andrei and his wife Lyubov turned out to be very cultured people and attentive to our wishes. During the movement along the route to Teriberka, they stopped the car without any problems, if we wanted to take photos with beautiful landscapes, they themselves suggested interesting places, not counting the main objects in Teriberka. The dinner was also worthy. So we were very comfortable with them, we are happy to recommend Andrey and Lyubov as organizers of the excursion. We ourselves are considering the possibility of going with them to other places in the Murmansk region.
